TikTok Shop Application Rejected? Why It Happens and How to Fix It (2026)

Updated October 2026
Few things are more frustrating than finishing your TikTok Shop application, waiting a few days, and seeing “Your application was not approved.” The good news: most rejections come from a small number of fixable problems, usually details that don’t match exactly. The bad news: resubmitting without finding the real cause can make things worse, because TikTok keeps your earlier submissions and compares them.
This guide explains why US TikTok Shop applications get rejected in 2026, how to tell which type of rejection you have, and what to do before you try again.
First, check which rejection screen you have
Not every “rejected” message means the same thing. Sellers usually see one of three outcomes, and each needs a different response:
| What you see | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| “Account application was not approved” with a Submit option | Something in your application didn’t pass review, but you can correct it | Find the mismatch, fix it, then resubmit |
| “Identity verification failed” with an Appeal option | TikTok couldn’t verify the person or document | Prepare a clear, valid document that matches your application exactly, then appeal |
| “Your account application was rejected” with no option to resubmit | A final decision on that application | Don’t keep retrying the same details. Get advice before starting a new application |
Take a screenshot of the exact message before you change anything. It is the most useful clue you have.

What US sellers need to get approved
Many rejections happen because something required is missing or doesn’t match. As of 2026, US sellers are generally asked for the following:
Individual sellers
- 18 or older and a US resident
- A valid US photo ID: passport, passport card, driver’s license, state ID or permanent resident card
- Legal name, date of birth and residential address
- SSN or ITIN details and a W-9
- A US bank account for payouts and a phone number for verification
Business sellers
- Legal business name, EIN and US business address
- An IRS EIN confirmation letter (CP 575 or 147C) if requested
- A US photo ID for the business representative and any beneficial owners
- A business bank account in the company name
Requirements change from time to time, so always follow what Seller Center asks for during your application.
The most common reasons TikTok Shop applications get rejected
1. Your details don’t match exactly
This is the number one cause. TikTok compares your application against your ID, your bank account and, for businesses, IRS records. A missing middle initial, “LLC” vs “L.L.C.”, a different suite number or an old address can be enough to fail. Your name, business name, EIN and address should be identical everywhere.
2. Your ID or document photo can’t be read
Expired IDs, cropped or blurry photos, glare, screenshots instead of real photos, and files that are too large are all common problems. Verification is stricter in 2026: according to reports from US sellers, the option to enter your SSN as a backup when the ID scan fails was removed around May 2026. That means a bad photo is harder to recover from, so get it right the first time.
3. The wrong business type or documents
Choosing “individual” when you have an LLC (or the other way around), using a personal bank account on a business application, or uploading an SS-4 form instead of an official IRS EIN letter can all lead to rejection. The business type is difficult to change later, so choose carefully.
4. Representative or owner conflicts
The person who verifies the account should be the same person named in the application. Problems can also come up when the same person’s identity was already used on another TikTok Shop application.
5. Products in a restricted category
Since June 2026, TikTok requires approval before you can sell in 16 categories, including Beauty and Personal Care, Pet Supplies and Toys. Selling prohibited or restricted products without approval can stop your shop. Read our TikTok Shop category qualification guide to check your products.
6. Location and setup red flags
Applying from a foreign IP address or VPN, or making big changes to your details in the middle of setup, can trigger extra risk checks.
How to fix a rejected TikTok Shop application, step by step
- Stop and don’t resubmit straight away. Repeated, slightly different submissions can look suspicious.
- Save the rejection message and any email from TikTok.
- Gather your source documents: ID, IRS EIN letter or SSN details, bank statement and proof of address.
- Compare every field in your application against those documents, character by character: name, business name, EIN, address, suite number, ZIP code.
- Retake document photos in good light, on a flat dark surface, showing all four corners, with no glare.
- Check your products against the restricted category list and apply for qualification where needed.
- Resubmit or appeal once, using the option shown on your rejection screen, and only after everything matches.
How to avoid rejection the first time
- Decide your seller type (individual or business) before you start
- Make sure your bank account, ID and business records all use the same name and address
- Use a valid, unexpired ID and take a clear photo
- Apply from your normal US connection, not a VPN
- Check your product categories before listing anything

Frequently asked questions
How long does TikTok Shop take to review an application?
Reviews usually take a few days, but it varies. Category qualification applications are reported to take around 6 days in most cases.
Can I reapply after my TikTok Shop application was rejected?
Often, yes, if your screen shows a Submit or Appeal option. If the application was finally rejected, get advice before you start again so you don’t repeat the same mistake.
Can I use someone else’s ID or business to open a TikTok Shop?
No. The account must belong to the real person or business named on the application, and the representative must verify their own identity.
